We always knew we wanted the main character to be related to Tempe Brennan from Bones, and thought that a young version of her would be the most fun. Having all guy friends was another dynamic we could throw at her, so we went that route. In the very first outline, Shelton had a twin sister, but we decided to cut her and focus on only the four main characters. And Coop, of course.
